Have you ever looked in the mirror and asked why you were wearing those clothes? In the world of men’s fashion and grooming, small details actually make a huge difference. Don’t worry, we’ve got you these 9 style mistakes you make to elevate your personal style and ensure that you make a good first impression. Yup, by mistakes we’re talking about grooming errors and wardrobe malfunctions!

9. Sporting the “I Woke Up Like This” Look

Remember, appearance is the first thing that people judge. So that wrinkled shirt or unkempt hair would certainly give a bad impression. It says that you have a lack of attention to detail. Just take the extra five minutes to steam your shirt and comb your hair to appear neat to your colleagues and clients. Always start your day with a quick grooming routine.

8. Outdated Antiperspirant and No Signature Scent

Your body can actually adapt to antiperspirant in just two to three months, which makes it less effective. Many grab the same deodorant for years, not realizing that its protective power in their bodies has diminished. Also, some don’t even wear fragrance at all. You know, a subtle signature scent is a powerful way to make a good impression. It influences people to perceive your attractiveness and even how trustworthy you are.

7. Forgetting the Details

By forgetting the details, we meant wearing a perfectly tailored suit with trouser hems that are frayed. That’s an instant downgrade from your entire look. While first impression starts with your face, people will soon notice your clothing and footwear, which are indicators of self-respect and attention to detail. A weekly shoe shine and a visit to a tailor to fix those hems are efforts to project an image.

6. The Great Tuck/Untuck Debate

Should you tuck in your shirt or keep it tucked out? Well, the answer lies in your shirt’s design. A dress shirt that’s cut longer is meant to be tucked in. Wearing them untucked will make you look sloppy. Meanwhile, a casual shirt or polo with a straight-cut hem and side vents is to be worn untucked. Some polos even have a tennis tail with a slightly longer back hem, signaling that it should be tucked in, especially with a blazer or sports coat.

5. The Tie is a Dead Giveaway

While you may have nailed the other aspects, your tie comes in to destroy your look. It’s either hanging halfway down your chest or dangling past your belt buckle. The rule is that the tip of your tie should end right at the middle of your belt buckle to make you look more polished and put-together.

4. Wearing Trainers with a Suit

While you may have seen this work on the red carpet, it isn’t right for the office. The trend of pairing chunky and athletic style sneakers with a formal suit is misunderstood. The pant leg doesn’t even drape correctly over the sneaker, making you look sloppy. Celebrities had their suits custom-made with stylists helping them dress to make them look red carpet worthy. It isn’t the same as going to the office in a professional setting.

3. The Suit Button Faux Pas

Here’s a common mistake to note. On a two-button jacket, you should only button the top button. Why? The bottom button is decorative and shouldn’t be fastened. It will restrict the movement and ruin the drape. Meanwhile, for a three-button jacket top button is optional, the middle is buttoned, and the bottom one should never be. It’s also a mistake to wear a tuxedo jacket unbuttoned to a formal event.

2. Forgetting to “Unpack” Your Suit

If you’ve just bought a new suit or sports coat off the rack, then be aware of the vents at the back stitched with a small ‘X’ thread. It’s a temporary stitching to keep the garment smooth during shipping. Cut it open before wearing it, as walking around with the sewn vents is equivalent to leaving the price tag on.

1. Wearing Ill-Fitting Clothes

This is something that most men break. It doesn’t matter if you spent thousands on a designer suit or a couple of dollars for a shirt. If it doesn’t fit you, it will look cheap. Well-fitting clothes will boost confidence and trustworthiness. That ill-fitting clothing would look too baggy or too tight will send a message of low self-awareness.
