We sometimes tell ourselves our home is just “lived-in” rather than cluttered. We even promised that we would eventually organize everything. But you see, clutter accumulates gradually, so we don’t notice how much it’s affecting our lives until it reaches a tipping point. With that, here are 8 signs your home is more cluttered than you realize.

8. You Have Items You Haven’t Used or Thought About in Years

If you have items in your home that you haven’t used or thought about in years, consider donating or discarding them. Keeping them would lead to a cluttered home. If you know you own something but have no idea where it is, that’s a sign you have way too much stuff. Many people will go out and buy the exact same item simply because they don’t feel like sorting through their belongings to find the one they already have.

7. You Can’t Focus or Concentrate at Home

Perhaps you work from home, and your surroundings are so cluttered that you remain unproductive and stressed. When your cluttered surroundings are affecting your job, it’s a clear sign to take action. Remember, it’s hard to focus on important tasks when several things compete for your attention.

6. Your Finances Are Taking a Hit

Take note of this. If you’re spending a significant portion of your income on storage solutions, such as renting storage units or purchasing additional space to accommodate your belongings, it’s a sign that you have too much. You see, when you are under stress, you tend to make poor decisions, and as a result, your finances could suffer. At the root of your clutter are several items you’ve paid money for that impact your financial life in various ways.

5. Decision Fatigue Hits You Every Morning

One of the most obvious signs you have too much stuff in your house is that you experience a lot of decision fatigue every day. For instance, you may have a wardrobe full of clothes you never wear, and as a result, you need to dig through everything. That’s a case of decision fatigue hitting you early in the morning.

4. Your Home Stresses You Out More Than It Relaxes You

Our homes should be a place where we would want to retreat. There should be places where we can relax, slow down, and rest whenever we need to. However, when we have too much stuff, the clutter contributes to our stress levels and overwhelms us. It leaves us feeling like there is always something that needs to be done. If you often feel overwhelmed by clutter and disorganization, it may be time to declutter your belongings.

3. You Clean Constantly, But It Still Looks Messy

If you find yourself endlessly cleaning and tidying up, but things still look messy, that’s the clutter taking over. This may feel discouraging and harbor negative feelings about your house. That problem may come from the fact that we have too much visual clutter around. You see, having too many items makes it difficult to clean and dust properly.

2. Things End Up in Strange, Random Places

When you notice that items get stored in unusual places, this could be a sign that you don’t have enough room. That’s an overwhelming excess of clutter asking to be cleaned. People can spend over 2 days a year looking for lost items. Just think of all those productive things you could be doing besides searching for lost items.

1. You Can’t Close Drawers or Cabinets Without a Fight

If you regularly struggle to close and open drawers, cabinets, or cupboards, it’s likely because you have too much stuff in your home. The same can be said if items fall out of cabinets as you open them. It means your storage spaces may be overflowing, and you can’t fit everything in them. If you’re looking for a sign to declutter your stuff, then this is one of the important things to watch out for.
