It’s time to plug out of work for a while as we bring you to these 9 mountain towns that just get the magic of the holiday season. 

9. Blue Ridge, Georgia

This Georgia mountain getaway is about 90 minutes north of Atlanta off Interstate-575. Explore the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway that follows the Toccoa River to the charming town of McCaysville on its Tennessee border. Catch the Light up Blue Ridge weekend will start on November 28. There’s even a Gingerbread Village that adds to the Southern charm.

Located right at the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, this town transforms into a holiday dreamland every year. Stroll along the historic district, which is lined with shops and cozy restaurants. There’s also the Estes Park Winter Festival, where you can enjoy a market with gifts sold by local vendors. Meanwhile, the surrounding mountain peaks are perfect for holiday photos. 

7. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg is one of the most visited mountain towns in the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains. During Christmas, the town goes all out with Christmas lights, even putting them up on roadways and streets. You can even head to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park if you’re up for a cold hike. 

6. Breckenridge, Colorado

Breckenridge is one of the most loved Christmas towns in Colorado, thanks to its small-town charm and stunning mountain views. The historic Victorian downtown area comes alive with the holiday spirit, featuring festive lights in the buildings. You can also ski on four of their mountains or go shopping on Main Street. The town’s elevation will guarantee a snow-filled holiday. 

5. Pigeon Forge, Tennessee

Catch Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, which will run from November 1, 2025, to January 4, 2026. It’s when Dolly’s amusement park transforms into a winter wonderland with around six million holiday lights and a towering Christmas tree. Pigeon Forge also hosts its holiday celebration, Winterfest, which is a picture-perfect sight to see. 

4. Banff, Alberta, Canada

This charming mountain town is where you can send Santa’s workshop to write letters and try their 20 local eateries that serve holiday-themed cocoa. Don’t miss out the Banff Christmas Market that takes over three weekends from November to December. Also, add the Banff Gondola to your list and ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain. Even the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel transforms into a Christmas at the Castle site every holiday season.  

3. Park City, Utah

There are tons of holiday events in Park City throughout December. There are holiday markets and sleigh rides. There’s even a Christmas Eve torchlight parade, where skiers and snowboarders come down the mountain with torches to lead Santa to their town. Watch sing-along shows at Park City, Utah’s iconic Egyptian Theatre, or hop aboard Heber Valley Railroad’s North Pole Express. It’s a 90-minute round trip with hot cocoa and cookies. 

2. Ouray, Colorado

Ouray is a small town in the San Juan Mountains, often referred to as the “Switzerland of America.” They kick off the holiday season with Thanksgiving weekend and a seven-week-long Winterfest. The festival hosts events every weekend to culminate the annual Ice Festival in January. Take a stroll in the historic downtown area or soak in their natural hot springs, that’s surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

You’ll love celebrating Christmas in Aspen, as this Colorado mountain town is a haven for skiers with its vibrant après-ski scene. Aspen is also home to many luxury resorts with fireplaces and pampering spas. Catch their annual 12 Days of Aspen in downtown and ice skate while the season permits. Your kids can also meet Santa and his reindeer, as well as enjoy art workshops and activities for decorating stockings and ornaments.
