Imagine scoring a flight upgrade from economy to business class. It’s like winning a lottery, right? Suddenly, you’re eating five-star meals as you get to spread your legs in your comfy seat that turns into a bed. Oh, and did we even mention the branded skincare products from your free toiletries? To be honest, they’re rare, but not impossible. Here are 9 strategies that might improve your chances of flying premium without paying for full price.

9. Mention Special Occasions (Tactfully)

Yup, that trick you see on TV can happen in real life. If you’re celebrating a special occasion like a honeymoon or your 70th birthday, let the airline staff know, especially the check-in staff. You can subtly mention it to the check-in agent or flight attendant, as they may offer you a goodwill gesture of getting upgraded. But remember, be subtle by mentioning your celebration and any freebie they can get you. Manage your expectations, as it might be a free dessert or a gift package.

8. Travel Solo

Solo travelers have a higher chance of getting upgraded than a large group. Airlines find it easier to squeeze you into a single premium seat. Another trick is that if you’re comfortable sitting separately from your companions, mention it to the gate agent, as this might improve everyone’s chances for an upgrade.

7. Volunteer to Be Bumped from Overbooked Flights

If you’re not in a hurry, then you might want to offer to get bumped with overbooked flights. You’ll get a chance for an upgrade or another bonus because of your willingness to help them out. If you get pushed to a next flight, then maybe you’ll get a free trip to use within a year. Try to negotiate with the gate agent to get an upgrade on the later flight, but manage your expectations.

6. Fly During Off-Peak Times

Another way to catch a free upgrade is by taking flights that other people don’t want, like the earliest morning flight or the latest night flight. You’ll get an opportunity to get upgraded since there will be a few extra seats left. Those who fly business typically get premium cabins on Monday mornings and Friday evenings, so be wise in planning your travel.

5. Place an Upgrade Bid

Some airlines may allow you to place a bid upgrade to business class before your flight. This is much better than asking politely. Many airlines now offer an online bidding system where you name your price for an upgrade, and they review the entries. After, they award the upgrades to the highest bidders if premium seats are available. At least you get to pay for a fraction if you get to be the lucky bidder.

4. Arrive at the Gate Early

Make sure you get to your gate one to one and a half hours early before your flight departs. Checking in early might put you on the radar of a gate agent and possibly give you an upgrade once the flight gets overbooked. Gate agents have the power to make upgrades happen in the event of overbooked flights or last-minute changes. The best time to ask is while waiting to board, as gate agents know the availability of seats.

3. Use Airline Credit Cards Strategically

The Delta Reserve card and the Delta Reserve Business card may get you the advantage of scoring a complimentary upgrade to seating on Delta flights. Note that Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines are among those offering complimentary upgrades to their credit card holders. Beyond upgrades, some of them offer an incidental airline fee credit that cardholders can use for qualifying travel expenses.

2. Check In Exactly 24 Hours Before Your Flight

Checking in online or through the airline’s mobile app 24 hours before your flight, then premium economy and extra legroom seats open up to the general public. It’s because no one has bought the seats yet, and they won’t make money from upgrades at this point. Even by sumply moving from standard economy to premium increases your chances to score an upgrade for first class.

1. Earn Elite Status with Your Preferred Airline

The most reliable way to get an upgrade is to have elite status on the airline you’re flying. Most airlines reward their frequent flyers with complimentary upgrades on domestic routes. Loyalty is your strongest currency here, and you also get to enjoy benefits like bonus miles, lounge access, priority boarding, and free checked bags.
